Stigmatine History

On November 4th, 1816, Fr. Bertoni entered with two companions, Fr. John Mary Marani and Brother Paul Zanoli, the Complex [Church and Residence] of the Stimmate, in Verona, Italy. This building was closed for a long time and needed repairs, and was donated to him by Rev. Nicholas Galvani, his teacher of Moral Theology in the Seminary and Spiritual Director. The prime reason for the transaction of handing over this inheritance  was to establish a tuition-free school, and  also serve as the birth place of the congregation Fr. Gaspar was founding that day.

Little by little, Fr. Bertoni began writing the Constitutions for his Congregation, based on the Constitutions of St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus. Fr. Bertoni adapted this rule for the assistance of Bishops in the varied ministries of God’s Word. The growth of the Community was slow – in 1905, Stigmatines came to the USA – and in 1910 they started serving in Brazil.

For nearly two centuries, the  Apostolic Missionaries for the Assistance of Bishops, the Stigmatines have gone  to China, Thailand and the Philippines – as well as to various countries in Africa – and Latin America. In the year 2002, the Stigmatines also settled in India.

The Stigmatines have brought the message of hope for communion through the intercession of the Holy Spouses of Mary and Joseph, and  in the  healing Wounds of the Risen Lord.

Stigmatine Calendar

The ‘Stigmatine Calendar’ is the result of personal studies on the Congregation’s History, especially  from the first House Chronicles and other sources. For the most part, these entries cover the years 1777-1911, emphasizing our early history.

Early Biographies

These ‘Early Biographies’ are a translation of the works, sometimes anonymous, of earlier confreres. These men reflected from their vantage point on the  Stigmatines who preceded them. These perceptions date back to the memories of Stigmatines who lived a century ago – reflecting on the generation of Stigmatines  who would have known the Founder personally as well as our first Confreres.

A Brief Chronicle

The Breve Cronaca made up of two volumes covering our early history from the Founder’s birth [1777] until the establishment of Provinces in the 1940’s, due to World War II. The almost ‘news-bulleting’ style provides much interesting information for anyone interested in the  history of the Stigmatine Congregation.
